overview of windsurfing and the geography of it

windsurfing is a sport that mainly people by the sea or lakes do it consists of a board and sale and is used for fun and also a sport. The people who are the best in the world at windsurfing are from places that have a lot of wind and also they started at a young age. It is a brilliant sport and all you need is the gear wind and water and you sre set it can be done nearly every were in the world but some places are better than others. there are two types of windsurfing slalom or speed and wave or freestyle.

Robby Naish

Robby was born in in La jolla, San Diego, Californian. but at a young age his dad moved him to Kailua on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. he at the age of 11 he began the new sport of windsurfing he then won the world championship title at the age of 13. 

Antoine Albeau

Antoine started windsurfing at the age of 5 on the island of Ré (west coast of France).
Guided by his father Antoine became a professional windsurfer in 1992.
Since then,he has accumulated many national and international titles and is now considered as one of the best windsurfers in the world.French.

Björn Dunkerbeck 

Born 16 July 1969. He grew up in the volcanic archipelago and Spanish overseas colony of Canary Islands. He dominated the late 1980s and the entire 1990s professional scene, especially in racing, but was also a champion in wavesailing.

The one thing that all of these professionals have in common is that they all live near the sea and began windsurfing at a young age and they still do the type of windsurfing they do at home for example high winds flat water is perfect for slalom and high winds and big waves is perfect fot freestyle.

Best places for windsurfing in europe and why

Tarifa, Spain

Tarifa is known as the ‘Wind Capital of the World’ and is the southernmost point of the European continent. Tarifa has nice weather with the annual temperature being 19 degrees but can vary between 13 and 20.
The windsurfing season here is year round but is most common in the summer with a lot of wind and flat water but some beaches do not allow you to windsurf from them in the middle of the summer. As well as this there is a good nightlife and also many museums and churches to see.

Brandon Bay, Ireland

This is one of the best places to windsurf in Ireland with wind and waves on a rough day and also wind and flat water on a flat day for beginners. This is the place to go for wave surfing with high wind and big waves. But it does come with dangers with the weather conditions changing quickly. There is accommodation with cottages to rent 

Zadar, Croatia

With warm temperatures near guaranteed to be above 15 degrees from May to October. the summers winds are normally light to moderate but get stronger in spring and winter. There are many windsurfing schools for people looking to learn and also if you want a break from windsurfing there are plenty of attractions in the city of Zadar. It also has an airport to fly into and many campsites on the beaches to stray in.

The origins of windsurfing

History and Origins

Windsurfing began in 1948 when Newman Darby invented a floating platform with a sail. In 1964 he invented a universal joint that is still used today to allow the sail to pivot and control the board. It also had a fin at the back and a dagger board that made lateral resistance. This made sure that it went across the wind and was able to be controlled by the user and not just blown down wind by the wind. his sail was in the shape of a kite.  He was able to sail around the Trailwood Lake in Pennsylvanian.
He and his brothers set up a company called Darby Industries and began to manufacture these boards.

Jim Drake and Hoyle Schweitzer

In the mid sixties Jim an aircraft engineer wanted to invent a  ski of some sort that you could stand on that was powered by a kite. He asked his naber hoyle about the idea and he liked it so they began brainstorming and soon figured out that a kite would not work so they came up with a sail instead. they decided to test thier invention but soon found out that when the sail got wet it was very hard to get out of the water so they created the first uphaul this is a rope that is used to uphaul the sail and is still used today.
They named their new invention the skate. Then the Baja board and then finally the name it is known as today the windsurfer.


 They patented their invention and began to produce it but Jim didn't believe in it and sold the patent to Hoyle for $36,000. This was when Hoyle began to produce many boards and selling them they were a huge hit in Europe with 2 of 3  families having one.
